LISSY TRULLIE TO ROCK OUT AUSTIN
It’s been a hot minute since we reported on the activities of one of our favorite discoveries of the year, NYC garage-rocker
Lissy Trullie and her company of dashing Boho-rejects and art-school dropouts. Seems as if LT and the gang will be swinging through Austin next month at Emo’s in support of another Cannibal Cheerleader fave,
the Virgins. It’s a genuine New York City meets Lone Star State affair, so be there people! Here’s a few Lissy Trullie videos to quench your thirst until then!

NEW BAND CHEER: CINEMASOPHIA
Straight from the record label (
Little Black Cloud Records) that brought us the inimitable
Ringfinger comes
Cinemasophia, a Richmond quintet by way of Brooklyn that blaze a brand of shoegaze-meets-electro, Stars-inspired indie rock in an equal parts subdued and fuzzed-out manner that’s wholly unique. Featuring faraway, distant vocals like an early emo-record or a long-worn cassette, Cinemasophia are crafting bedroom ready tunes that are nonetheless sure to rattle the windows from their panes. Tracks like “Pet Enemies” simmer with an undercurrent of electronic warbles before dipping into guitar heroics near the song’s end. The band’s intense use of volume disparity and sonic shifts give their music an unpredictable and electric feeling, churning behind a Firefox window for a few minutes before bursting up and making the listener click on the iTunes icon to see just who is that playing again. Very addictive, check it out below.

ACL LINEUP REVEALED
This year’s
Austin City Limits Festival lineup has been revealed and while we here at Cannibal Cheerleader are excited about a few of the choices (the Virgins, the Raveonettes, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, and Sonic Youth to name a few) the headliners are considerably weaker this year. While we can’t fault anyone for liking Pearl Jam (not our cup o’ tea) and we have a passing interest in the Beastie Boys (early 90s anyone?), to have Dave Matthews Band, nemesis of all indie-rock fans, headlining the event is pretty grotesque. Oh well, you’ll still definitely be seeing us at the show, if only to check if the Arctic Monkeys will be playing any new material. Check out the whole lineup below:

NEW DECEMBERISTS’ ALBUM – THE HAZARDS OF LOVE
Tons to talk about this week, as the weekend featured some heavy-hitting leaks that provided all of us dedicated indie-nerds with a plethora of new tracks to download, starting with best of all, the Decemberists‘ new record the Hazards of Love. Coming across as equal parts focused (on the sharp and enticing story) as well as sprawling (massive instrumentation giving the album a feeling of grandeur), HOL might just be the album Colin Meloy and company were brought together to make. Who would have thought that a band so meticulous at the construction of whimsical tales of arcane tragedy and ecstasy could pull off the rock opera? Actually, no one is surprised really, as overblown and fantastical is just what the Decemberists do best, especially on this, their most hard-rocking, anthemic album to date. Check out some tracks below and try to disagree.
The Decemberists – “The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid”
The Decemberists – “Margaret in Captivity”

NEW YEAH YEAH YEAHS VIDEO
Lots of Yeah Yeah Yeahs updates these days, but small wonder really, as It’s Blitz!, the band’s third LP, is quickly being hailed as the New York group’s greatest triumph and a classic of the age. We here at Cannibal Cheerleader agree with such sentiments in no uncertain terms, as the album has delivered on all the promises of this fantastic trio, as does this playfully rocking music video for first single “Zero”, directed by Karen O’s boyfriend Barney Clay. Check it out below, it features KO seeming assured and happy as she trots down city-streets, but still with that same vulnerability we’ve come to expect from the “Maps” songstress. Check it:
Bonus! Did you know that there were iTunes-only bonus tracks for It’s Blitz!? Now you do:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Hysteric (Acoustic Version)”
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Faces”

NEW BAND CHEER: DUCHESS SAYS
In the vein of the Karen O crew comes Montreal’s Duchess Says, a face-shredder of a punk/new-wave act with a French-Canadian songwriting repertoire and the self-proclaimed moniker of ‘moog rock’ to back it all up. Seriously, this group surprises and amazes with its blazing sound, that sounds altogether as amazing and alien as it does familiar to us dance-punk aficionados. Check it out below and let us know what you think.
Duchess Says – “Ccut Up”
Duchess Says – “La Friche”
Comments? Anyone else want to disco with us to “Faces”?

Over at
Stereogum our favorite masters of obscure songwriting and bookish lyricism

TRYOUTS: ROLO TOMASSI’S HYSTERICS

We here at Cannibal Cheerleader consider ourselves connoisseurs of the punk scene in its many forms. From 77 punk, post-punk revival, ska, two-tone, oi, we’ve studied and nurtured an appreciation for it all. However, what 2008 seemed to be lacking for us was a heavy injection of some incredibly pummeling hardcore. Sure there were excellent releases, but nothing that seemed to push the boundaries, until we stumbled upon
Rolo Tomassi and their debut LP Hysterics, which writhes and twists like a zombie on fire, spitting noodly guitar licks like sparks and filling the room with lead singer Eva Spence’s fanatical tongue-speak wailings. Sounding like a Mars Volta clone populated with straightedge punks with a fiery disposition, the band’s compositions tear across the spectrum, at times slow and meticulous at others stormy and hellish. For all the talk about hardcore becoming mired in sameness, Rolo Tomassi dismisses the nay-sayers with a wildly inventive record, one that’s sure to please any fans of uncommonly ferocious punk rock.
