SPOON ANNOUNCE X3 FEST AT STUBBS
Sorry about the lack of posts this week Cannibal Cheerleader faithful (busy times here in the Atx) but we’re extremely excited to announce that Austin’s favorite indie-rockers Spoon will be headlining their own three-day fest from July at Stubb’s here in the capital city called Spoonx3. The band will be headlining all three days with different opening bands each day, including Cannibal Cheerleader favorite Low opening for them on Friday.

Spoon – “Don’t Make Me A Target”

NEW BLOC PARTY REMIX ALBUM
The new Bloc Party album features the choicest cuts from remixes from the band’s catalogue to date. While Silent Alarm Remixed, while awesome, may have suffered from some fluff, the feeling that immediately arises from Intimacy Remixed is judiciousness, a carefully selected assortment of tracks featuring the best collage of dub, club bangers, dream-pop, and the signature Bloc Party spidery indie-rock. One of our favorite releases so far this year, check it.

Bloc Party – “Halo (We Have Band Dub)”
Bloc Party – “Ion Square (Banjo Or Freakout Remix)”

NEW GOD HELP THE GIRL ALBUM
With rumors abound that Glasgow indie-poppers Belle & Sebastian may be down for the count, it came as a great relief to learn about God Help The Girl, a storyline-driven twee-opera side project from wunderkind B&S frontman Stuart Murdoch. Featuring lilting indie classics like “Come Monday Night” and mixing in slow-burning rockers like “I Just Want Your Jeans” (featuring Asya from Smoosh, who we love by the way), God Help the Girl seems a natural progression from the more progressive-pop of the Life Pursuit. Here’s hoping it’s not the band’s swan song!

God Help The Girl – “I Just Want Your Jeans”
God Help The Girl – “A Down And Dusky Blonde”

Wordless, Speechless

MY MORNING JACKET LEAVES US BREATHLESS
Last night My Morning Jacket continued their massive Evil Urges tour and brought it all back home to Austin, “Where civilization first began,” according to Jim James. The performance recalled the last time the legendary James Brown swung through Austin before he died and played this same stage at Stubb’s BBQ, though he certainly would have been surprised to know that his heir apparent was a head-banging, wild-hair growing Southern rocker like the boys in MMJ. However, to see Jim James strut across the stage during “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1″ with a cape draped over his shoulders, crooning and shrieking with all the showmanship of the hardest working man in show-business, one can see how he might be mistaken for the soul music legend.
The Jacket’s set leaned heavily on the fantastic new Evil Urges LP but included crowd favorites all the way back to the Tennessee Fire. It was truly a night for the old-schoolers and new fans alike, as barn-burners like “War Begun” and “Evelyn Is Not Real” gave way to new standouts like “I’m Amazed” and “Sec Walkin”. The band’s penchant for bringing down the house is storied in the world of live music, but to silence a notoriously restless Austin crowd at the sold-out Stubb’s venue is truly a feat. Even during the drone-worthy exit music of “Dondante” the people surrounding me were rapt with attention, letting the music flow over them in waves while the light show danced spectacularly on Stubb’s giant overhang (pictured below).
Some of the best tracks played included the “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2″ which segued into its “Good Intentions” scream then right into a furious guitar-breakdown, an absolutely transcendent version of “Lay Low” that found James’ guitar in hypnotic form, a killer rendition of “Wordless Chorus” where James slid across the stage on his knees in the middle of an elated cry, and the finale of “One Big Holiday”.
Ultimately the Jacket’s set was a testament to the power of live rock and roll and an experience not soon forgotten by the likes of Austin’s Southern rock fans. If you have a chance to see the band on their Evil Urges tour, by all means buy tickets well in advance and find yourself directly in front of this amazing act while you still can. Definitely deserving of the moniker ‘the best live band in the world’.
My Morning Jacket – “Lay Low” (Live)

MMJ IN DALLAS VIDEO
While the My Morning Jacket performance in Austin certainly wasn’t lacking in brilliance, it did miss out on something the Dallas folks had – Erykah Badu! That’s right, the soul-songstress joined the band on stage for her song “Tyrone” which the band famously covered at their much lauded 2008 Bonnaroo performance. Here’s the video below! Still doesn’t beat out Austin’s version of “Lay Low” though, haha.

MOUNTAIN GOATS REVEAL NEW EP
Straight off the success of their latest LP Heretic Pride, John Darnielle and the rest of his satanic band the Mountain Goats are releasing a tour exclusive EP limited to 666 copies. The double 7″ can be picked up at their shows (the band swings through Austin Nov. 1st) and features four brand new songs. Digital release will be announced later but for now, be prepared for Lovecraft in Austin this fall!

The Mountain Goats – “Lovecraft in Brooklyn”

Comments? Anyone else at the Jacket show?

Invasion USA

THE HIVES INVADE AUSTIN
According to this Pitchfork report, after a string of European festivals the infamously insane Hives will be invading our shores with an American tour that thankfully dips south into Austin. Looks like they’ll be playing Sept. 16th at Stubb’s so mark your calendars now people. This is all of course to support the release of last year’s terrific Black and White Album which you should pick up immediately (here’s a track from it!).

The Hives – “Tick Tick Boom”

NEW M83 VIDEO – “KIM AND JESSIE”
Our favorite spacey, 80s-referencing, lovelorn dream-poppers in M83 (which is of course really just Anthony Gonzalez) have released a video for their single “Kim and Jessie”, one of the best tracks off their now seminal Saturdays=Youth. This albums stands beside some of the band’s best work and if the haunting vocals and transcendent tunes don’t convince you, maybe the awesome roller-skating in this very John Hughes-y video will!

05 Golden Age
06 Family Tree

Up Against the Wall

TILLY/BELAIRE/RINGO D’STARR ROCK EMO’SLast night at Emo’s here in Austin, Texas, attendees of the earth-shattering performances of Tilly and the Wall, Belaire, and Ringo Deathstarr were witness to a brilliant becoming, as three already immensely respectable acts combined forces for an evening of sonic epiphanies, with each band blowing away expectations to an infectiously joyous crowd. The room teemed with life as if every track by every band meant the world to each person in the club, and the acts rode these vibes to the top of their respective games. With so much good to be said about all three groups, I thought it best to do a show review about each one separately, in chronological order.

Ringo Deathstarr
Leading off the night were relative newcomers Ringo Deathstarr who nonetheless have managed to claim the throne as Austin’s best new band around seemingly overnight with this, one of their strongest performances yet. Starting with a slow churn that saw the band testing the waters with gorgeous guitarwork and echo-laden vocals, the foursome quickly whipped into crunchy numbers such as “Down on You”, to the crowd’s delight. All the while lead singer Elliot Frazier kept up his mysteriously aloof nature and threw guitars to the ground with such carefree effortlessness and reckless abandon as to suggest the shoegazers have finally become rockstars. We here at Cannibal Cheerleader believe that Ringo Deathstarr don’t have to prove it to us anymore; these guys are some of the finest rock musicians not just in Austin, but the whole country. Aligned like a firing squad, all four members in a line at the front of the stage, with the audience as their willing victims, Ringo Deathstarr brought their A-game as an opener and managed to set the bar sky-high for the following acts.
Ringo Deathstarr – “Down on You”

Belaire
No performance would’ve been harder to follow than Ringo Deathstarr’s guitar-throwing, confetti filled, wall-of-sound extravaganza, but Belaire managed to take the challenge in stride and delivered a performance both musically solid and creatively inventive, turning kitsch keyboard midi-tracks into genuine hip-shakers and delighting rockers and ravers alike. Having only just recently reformed with the addition of three new members, Belaire nonetheless proved they can still bring the goods by combining synth-experimentalism with rock aesthetics and dance grooves into a hypnotic combination that, while requiring some getting used to, ranks among some of the best damn music in Austin today. Not recommended for those into bland pop, Belaire tore through their bizarre cache of oldies and debuted tracks from their upcoming fall release, the details of which have yet to be released. Poised effortlessly behind a wall of keyboards set up at the front of the stage, this quintet proved guitars aren’t the only instruments that get the people moving in Austin.
Belaire – “You Really Got Me Goin’”

Tilly and the Wall
One can only imagine the anxiety of having two bands absolutely kill before your band has a chance to play, the crowd already in a frenzy before your arrival, and you knowing you have to give it your all or go home now. That was the attitude that Tilly and the Wall seemingly attacked the stage with last night, bursting forth with such fervor and energy as to claim this was the only show that ever did and ever will matter to the band. With a dazzling light show blazing behind them, a cornucopia of streamers and balloons cascading through the audience, and a Jamie Presnall tap dancing on a raised in the middle of it all, Tilly tore through a set of oldies such as “Nights of the Living Dead” and some new tracks off of their latest LP O such as “Pot Kettle Black”, all of which the audience connected with instantaneously. The band’s music combines infectious pop melodies with subversive indie-rock lyrics on love, loss, desperation, and the outsider experience, sounding like a twee band on steroids, with all the sarcastic and scathing humor of such acts with a degree of punk fury and inventiveness to boot. This of course was the case for last night’s show, as Tilly and the Wall left it all on the table, furiously playing through a brilliant set of blazing sing-a-long duets and guitar shrieks before calling an end to the night’s festivities. Exhausted and exhilarated all at once, all us crazy kids bid adieu to Emo’s in hopes that maybe next time we’d get a warning before another show with three acts as good as these guys caught us off guard.

RA RA RIOT POST SONG FROM UPCOMING DEBUT LP
Ra Ra Riot have posted on their Myspace a new version of “Dying is Fine”, a song originally on their self-titled EP, that will now be featured on The Rhumb Line, their debut LP on Barsuk. The band’s intricate instrumentation suits this higher-end production and this recording seems to capture much of the band’s raw live energy. Ra Ra Riot will be swinging back through Austin Oct. 3rd at Stubb’s, so don’t miss them!

Yeesh! Long post! Hope this will tide you over for the weekend people, I need to catch up in my work on the paper version of Cannibal Cheerleader. Until then, leave a comment or two and tell me what you think!

Bringing You Comfort, Baby

RILO KILEY AT STUBB’S

Sometimes when you go and see one of your favorite bands play, however good the show may be, you find yourself strangely disappointed, either because the set sounded too stagey and planned, the group didn’t play any of your favorite songs, or the crowd was just not feeling it. That was definitely NOT the case with Rilo Kiley’s set last night at Stubb’s here in Austin. Blasting through a set of stone cold classics (”Pictures of Success” AND “Better Son/Daughter”?? No way!) and amazing newer tracks (”Dreamworld”, “Breakin’ Up”, “Close Call”? Awesome!) on this one of the band’s last stops on their “Under the Blacklight Tour”, Blake Sennet, Jenny Lewis, and the rest of the gang mounted an indie assault with loose flair in front of an incredibly receptive Austin audience that would soon forget! More pictures and the setlist (as best as I can remember it and a little bit out of order) and more pictures below!

Setlist: “Close Call”, “Moneymaker”, “Capturing Moods”, “Dreamworld”, “Breakin’ Up”, “Ripcord”, “The Absence of God”, “It’s a Hit”, “With Arms Outstretched”, “Does He Love You?”, “Better Son/Daughter”, “Silver Lining”, “I Never”
Encore: “Pictures of Success”, “15″, “Portions for Foxes/Spectacular Views”

MF DOOM/J DILLA COLLAB EMERGES

According to the Stones Throw website, before J Dilla’s untimely passing he collaborated with none other than our favorite emcee MF Doom as well as the infamouse Ghostface Killah on a variety of tracks using samples from his swan song Donuts (some of these tracks ended up on Fishscale, while the Doom tracks have never surfaced).

Now, Stones Throw will be releasing two of these Dilla/Doom/Ghostface tunes exclusively through their website (they’re called “Sniperlite” and “Murder Goons”). You know as soon as we get wind of these tracks we’ll let you readers in on a listen, but let’s just all salivate at the possibility of Doom’s awesome flow over a J Dilla beat. Sweetness!

GIRL TALK TALKS NEW ALBUM

According to this interview with Pitchfork, Gregg Gillis AKA Girl Talk will be releasing his newest album via ‘the Radiohead/NIN/pay-what-you-want model’ before the end of the week! That’s good news to us as this mashup-artist’s Night Ripper was one of our favorite pop wonderworks of yesteryear so we’ll be waiting with bated breath for Feed the Animals (not Food for Animals mind you, haha). Also check out the Girl Talk Myspace for the dronetastic prep-track for the album. Weird stuff man!

Comments anyone? Anyone at this Rilo Kiley show get any better pictures?

The Art of Sadcore

CARISSA’S WIERD OFFSHOOT BANDS COME TO AUSTIN
Our favorite post-Nirvana Seattle band and ‘sadcore‘ artists extraordinaire Carissa’s Wierd had a multitude of bands form in their wake, most notably Band of Horses. However, two of those bands, Grand Archives and the solo project of Sera Cahoone will be hitting up Stubb’s on June 21st. Two great acts featuring ex-members of CW, so be sure and hit them up when they come to town.

NEW BAND CHEER – HIGH PLACES
Although much blogged about, Pitchforked, and generally well-reported on, Brooklyn duo High Places are just now coming into rotation on the Cannibal Cheerleader playlist. Electronic noodling and whispy female vocals combine to make strange, ephemeral pop tunes that swim by easily but leave a smoky haze in their wake. Very unique in sound, this duo promises to go places with their upcoming full-length, as reported by Stereogum. Check them out, they’re definitely worth a listen.

M.I.A. CANCELS EUROPEAN TOURThe seemingly endless tour of our favorite female rapper M.I.A. has apparently hit a snag, as the songstress has just announced she will be cancelling her upcoming European tour in order to avoid burning out. So sayeth Miss Maya:

“I’m canceling because I feel like physically I just have to stop for a second,” she said. “It’s too insane. I was losing a sense of just, like, reality, you know what I mean? I think for an artist like me, it’s so important for me to be in the streets and go to the same shop every day and see the same people and, like, communicate. And it’s really difficult to do that when you’re in the city every day for 24 hours. Like, I love connecting with my band, but I want to actually help them and be a part of peoples’ lives. Which is really hard when you’re on tour.”

Seems reasonable to us. Here’s hoping the time off produces a new record like last year’s Cannibal Cheerleader approved Kala.

Hangover Music

RILO KILEY PLAYING STUBB’S JUNE 16TH

Quite a birthday bash we had last night, thanks to all who came! In celebration of the ‘morning-after’ feeling here’s a reminder: Rilo Kiley will be playing Stubb’s on Monday June 16th as the last stop of their Under the Blacklight tour. You know we’ll be there, blogging hats on!

Here’s a proper hangover tune from RK:

BE YOUR OWN PET PLAYED A SECRET AUSTIN SHOW?

Be Your Own Pet apparently played a secret gig at the Broken Neck after their Stubb’s show last Thursday. Why weren’t we invited?! Oh well, the Austin Chronicle was there and they have some pictures up – enjoy!

NEW CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES VIDEO

Here’s a video for “How I Could Just Kill A Man”, the first single from Charlotte Sometimes‘ debut album Waves and the Both of Us.

That’s all for this week, see everyone next week (Monday brings a special article from yours truly! Hint: it has to do with waffles…)

BEHIND THE SCENES OF BE YOUR OWN PET

If you don’t already know that Be Your Own Pet is swiftly becoming one of our favorite bands, you haven’t been paying attention to our endless lauding of what was last Thursday’s fantastic show at Stubb’s. Surfing the Nylon Magazine tour site we came across the BYOP Blog for the days leading up to the show. Events include an impromptu haircut for Jemina Pearl (gotta love her Friday the 13th tattoo), chilling with the Virgins, and almost getting caught in the Austin hailstorm. Texas goodness!

Also, check out this cool Spin Magazine article about the rehearsal room of Be Your Own Pet, which happens to be in guitarist Jonas Stein’s parents’ house. Ah to be young again. I especially like the part about the Buzzcocks poster and getting skateboard equipment stolen at South By Southwest. Frankly, if you don’t lose SOMETHING at SX, you haven’t been to Austin.

In other news, there’s NO news about the release of an EP this summer that BYOP promised would feature the three missing tracks from their excellent sophomore LP Get Awkward. I fully encourage everyone to buy this when it hits the shelves (or better yet just import the UK version with the tracks already one there) but if you haven’t heard these tunes yet, give them a listen here. “Black Hole” and “Becky” both make the top ten list of best BYOP tunes of all time.

Be Your Own Pet – “Becky”

Be Your Own Pet – “Black Hole”

Be Your Own Pet – “Blow Your Mind”

NEW BECK SONG – CHEMTRAILS

You can check out a new Beck song from his upcoming (supposedly titled) Modern Guilt LP. It’s called “Chemtrails” and if this is any indication about what producer Danger Mouse has done with the alt-folkster, we can expect a softer, more stylistic Beck, combining the sonic palette of Sea Change with the lyrical content of his past few LPs, like The Information. Definitely check it out over at Beck’s Myspace or his website (just click on the jukebox in the upper right).

NEW BAND CHEER – FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE

Speaking of South by Southwest here’s a UK band that’s seemed to hedge its reputation on its completely awesome SXSW performance. They’re called Florence and the Machine and they recall Amy Winehouse with a garage-rock bent. Check out a video from their SX set below and then listen to their awesome first single “Kiss With A Fist”. Enjoy people and comment!
