We here at Cannibal Cheerleader have been waiting with bated breath since even before we started the blog for new material from our favorite foul-mouthed ferocious songstress Annie Hardy akaGiant Dragand finally her infamously delayed Swan Song EP gets a release date – Feb. 16th people on Roar Scratch. Get on this immediately folks, check out the tracklist below, the sweet as shit video for lead single “Stuff to Live For” below that, and a live version of “Swan Song” below THAT. Exciting stuff.
Swan Song EP
1. Swan Song
2. Stuff to Live For
3. White Baby
4. Heart Carl
We’ve been huge fans of Neko Case since her Blacklisted days (and we still can’t get over how awesome Fox Confessor was), so we were ecstatic to nab a copy of the Canadian soulstress’ new LP Middle Cyclone, which definitely does not dissapoint. Featuring hushed instrumentation backing Case’s powerful voice, the album is her most organic yet, due in no small part to the recording location of an abandoned farmhouse. With much shorter songs featuring small vignettes about the multitude of wild characters Case has been known for, Middle Cyclone combines experimentalism with alt-country stalwarts to create one of our favorite albums of the year so far. Give it a sample listen below.
We’re still anxiously awaiting the newest release from Giant Drag, the Swan Song EP, and Annie Hardy continues to tease us, this time with a short excerpt from an upcoming music video for standout track “Stuff to Live For”. Apparently the new video is going to feature Annie being covered with a whole variety of disgusting liquids, so be sure and check it below.
Kylesa just conducted an interview with the influential online metal mag Crusher Magazine. Check it out here and stay tuned for the new album Static Tensions which we hope to grab a copy of ASAP!
Annie Hardy of our favorite shoegaze-cum-fuzzrock band Giant Drag has been busy lately, posting away at her website’s blog, finishing up her new Swan Song EP, and getting an interview with Stereogum about her band’s progress. The Stereogum article features the killer, souped-up version of “Stuff To Live For” so go there immediately and check it out.
In other news, GD’s hit “This Isn’t It” was featured in an episode of one of our favorite TV shows Friday Night Lights (check out the YouTube below), which got Miss Hardy thinking,
why isn’t she in an episode of Gossip Girl?
Our explanation? Lack of exposure! That’s why we’re here every few weeks, tooting the horn of Giant Drag. Besides, “You Fuck Like My Dad” would be more suited to Big Love.
PS. Apparently this is going to be the new Giant Drag Swan Song EP Cover.
What do you guys think? We think sheer awesomeness of course (and we’re gonna write ‘dang man’ on our knuckles too from now on).
Our old pal Annie Hardy of our favorite shoegazey solo-act Giant Drag has been staying busy, what with recording her new Swan Song EP and all (by the way check out the new version of “Swan Song” up on the band’s Myspace, it’s absolutely haunting and gorgeous). Recently Annie
hooked up with Joe from the Icarus Line to perform a DJ set under the moniker Mister and Misses Howl, which will hopefully speak to more collaborations between the two bands soon.
Additionally Giant Drag have added their new song “Stuff to Live For” to a short film by photographer Bella Howard which you can check out at this website. We’re waiting with bated
breath for Annie’s new EP, so remember to buy stuff from her Ebay Store so she has the money to put it out already!
Local chamber-poppers Southern Drama are playing the Beauty Bar here in the ATX Monday July 21st with fellow awesome Austinites Death Is Not A Joyride. Definitely go and check these ladies out, their music is killer! Check out this music video for a taste of their tracks.
Speaking of killer, last night’s Terror Thursday featured one of the most gruesome and satisfying flicks to date: Return of the Aliens: The Deadly Spawn is an old fashioned monster movie gorefest, complete with slimy, non-CGI creatures, decapitations, face-ripping,
explosions, and chewed-up grandmothers. Near perfection in my book, definitely deserving of four and a half out of five bloody pon-poms. Check out this unbelievably cool trailer if you don’t believe the hype about this movie – go rent it NOW. ******************************************************************** VIVIAN GIRLS REVEAL NEW 7″
We can’t seem to get enough of the infectious Vivian Girls here at Cannibal Cheerleader, and with good reason as their jangly, whispery rock is as unique as it is listenable. The Girls have put up a new track entitled “I Can’t Stay” up on their Myspace, and it’s not on the streets until September on vinyl so this is the last bone we’re being thrown for a while. Also their sold out self-titled debut is getting a re-release in the fall, good news for those of us who didn’t hear about these ladies until too late! Here’s a jam to spin this weekend.
According to the Giant Drag website, Annie Hardy of our favorite My Bloody Valentine-referencing, shoegazey, post-punk solo/duo band will be recording a new, as of yet untitled EP. The tracklist will include live favorites such as “Swan Song” and “White Baby” as well as tracks “Heart Carl” and “Stuff to Live For”. This is a welcome change for Hardy who was unceremoniously dropped from Interscope following her first awesome LP Hearts and Unicorns. Hardy and other GD contributors are hard at work slamming out a new record but in the meantime visit her Ebay Store so you can donate to the cause of saving Giant Drag from obscurity. Seriously, this is one of my favorite bands in recent memory and definitely deserves to get the opportunity to make more music, so check it out. Also, here’s a sample of “Swan Song” taken live from a Giant Drag show in Paris.
******************************************************************** PREY FOR SLEEP TOUR CANCELLED!
“Due to issues with our booking agent we’ve been forced to cancel our upcoming nationwide summer tour”, says lead singer Hunter Townsend of awesome Austin metal act Prey For Sleep. Apparently the booking agent was unable (or too lazy!) to secure spots for PFS and the band was forced to call it off due to monetary issues. In the meantime though Hunter and the boys would like to know what Austinites or any of their fans want from the band now. Their latest Myspace bulletin reads:
“Here’s a thought.
What do you want from Prey for Sleep in the next few months?
T-Shirts? Lighters? Hoodies? DVDs? Lunch boxes?
Let us know what you need to spread the word.”
So there you have it, let Prey For Sleep know what you need from them by contacting them at their Myspace. A PFS lunchbox sounds pretty rad to me that’s for sure.
The band will be heading up to Cleveland in August to record an as of yet untitled EP, then plans to attempt a nationwide tour in January. Good luck guys! ******************************************************************** SUMMER SHOWS IN AUSTIN – CC CALENDAR
Here’s a rundown of some upcoming shows in Austin that Cannibal Cheerleader will definitely be attending:
Hey to all of the readers/users of Waffles.fm, the best replacement ever for Oink.cd in my opinion. Thanks for swinging by the blog and reading the ‘Converge’ piece posted on the front page of Waffles. If you don’t know what Waffles is you should read this article about file-sharing and see if the Oink/Waffles movement is right for you. Until next time, comment people!
Sorry about taking a break for Memorial Day guys, hope this monster post makes up for it! See you tomorrow!
So, things seem to be tough all over, with many of CC’s favorite artists apparently falling off (or never having been) the indie rock radar and the artists being forced to turn to the fans for support. This is of course yet another sign of the way that the music industry must take on a serious sea change to stay afloat. It seems odd that bands are having to turn back to the fans for support after the labels fail them. Perhaps it’s better for we the fans though, as artists will once again pander to the individual’s tastes rather than all the corporate nonsense.
Up at the top there is perennial CC fave Giant Drag (now lead solely by lead guitarist/vocalist/badass Annie Hardy) who seems to be having it rough after getting dropped from a major label. In order to record her second album Annie is needing all the help she can get, so she’s got a ‘donate’ button on her website and she’s opened up an eBay store. Check it and donate/buy cool stuff homies. ******************************************************************************************************************************** Next up is our friends Trophy Scars who had the rug pulled out from under them on their when their entire UK tour (a venture which required the band members all emptying their bank accounts) got cancelled because of dick promoters. Awfulness indeed but they too have opened up an eBay store and you can check their website for more info about how to help. ******************************************************************************************************************************** Just so things aren’t all gloomy, check out this rad new artist called Also, partial ACL Lineup here. Gnarls Barkley, N.E.R.D., Hot Chip, CSS, the Raconteurs, Del the Funkee Homosapien, etc. Sounds okay but hopefully we’ll get some more than this because there certainly isn’t enough indie here to satiate me (though N.E.R.D. does kinda rule…) ******************************************************************************************************************************** Oh, and here’s the real cover for the new Charlotte Sometimes Album. Looks like it’s gonna be awesome! Can’t wait for the May release!
