Rolo Tomassi Interview

Our favorite UK progressive-hardcore kids Rolo Tomassi have been busy as of late – from a tour spanning the UK to recording the followup to their excellent debut LP Hysterics. Recently news arose that the band was working with well-known DJ and producer Diplo after he caught the band during SXSW ‘09, where the band performed at our SXSW Blood Bath. We caught up with James Spence, keyboardist and co-vocalist of the group to see what 2010 brings for the genre-defying rockers.

JS: Nice to hear from you. Hope all is well Stateside.

CC: Is the album really called Stolen Magic like Wikipedia says? Where did the name come from?

JS: Stolen magic IS NOT the title. We were asked to give a working title to a magazine for a feature they were doing on new albums in 2010 and we gave that as that was an idea we had but we came up with a much much better title that we’re using. Details will be announced in the coming week in a special way.

CC: What’s it like working with Diplo? How did you guys meet?

JS: Coming to LA and working with Diplo was a fantastic experience. The 3 weeks we were over were genuinely amongst the best times we’ve ever had as a band.

We were made aware of Diplos interest in our band from an interview he gave to Pitchfork and we contacted him with the view to have him do a remix for us and things escalated from there. He came saw us while we were over at SXSW last year but we didn’t meet him until May when he DJ’d in Nottingham.

CC: What’s the record sounding like?

JS: The record sounds incredibly heavy. To begin with the songs we wrote are far better and more developed than the material on Hysterics so we had a good base to make a good recording..

CC: Finished your album cover yet? What’s that going to look like?

JS: Simon Moody (www.linedwithghosts.com) who designed the Hysterics art and a lot of our merch is currently working on it. We haven’t seen any of it yet but we fully trust Simon to come up with something that will reflect this project. The title we’re using opens up a lot of avenues artwise. The possibilities are endless in terms of aesthetics.

CC: Coming over to the States again for SXSW? What’re your plans for March?

JS: Unfortunately we won’t be coming over this year for SXSW. Some of our friends including Pulled Apart By Horses are going over for the first time so make sure you check them out. The record will hopefully be out in the UK at the start of April so during March we’ll be preparing to go on tour in the UK and Europe. America is totally still on our radar and we will be over to tour properly for sure before the end of the year.

Thanks a lot,

James

Can’t wait to hear all the Rolo Tomassi updates that will be springing up over the next few months. Keep it parked here at Cannibal Cheerleader RT fans, we’ve got all the news that’s fit to print!

I recently did an interview with Rolo Tomassi’s Eva Spence, about life on the road, her company and life as one of the busiest people on the planet. Read it here, if you get a chance: http://atthesinema.co.uk/?p=2614
