ALICE GLASS NAMED NME’S COOLEST PERSON Alice Glass of our favorite band Crystal Castles has been named the world’s #1 coolest person according to the NME Cool List. Other listmakers include Alex Turner, M.I.A., and Jay-Z amongst many others. Still, it’s the Castles frontwoman who makes the grade and turned out the #1 spot. Congrats to the CC gang!

Jemina Pearl of the now defunct Be Your Own Pet covering the Ramones’ “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore on guitar? I’ve gotta hear this! Well unfortunately the song in question turned up on the most recent episode of the CW drama Gossip Girl and the Time Warner corporation has taken down all traces of the song and video off of YouTube. Still, until the song surfaces again we here at Cannibal Cheerleader are comforted by the fact that Pearl is still alive and kicking somewhere, still belting out reckless punk anthems like there’s no tomorrow. Anyone got a copy of this? Send it our way!
NEW BAND CHEER: ROLO TOMASSI Ripping and snarling their way out of Sheffield, UK, prog-punksters and mathcore musicians Rolo Tomassi astounded us recently with their combination of hardcore punk shrieks and guitar manipulation the likes of which we’ve never heard. Imagine the music of Mars Volta, throw in the wails and vocal bizarreness of Ponytail, apply the thrash elements of Converge liberally, and wrap it up with Be Your Own Pet as the bow on top and that’s Rolo in a nutshell. Helmed by Eva Spence and quickly becoming an infamous live act over the pond, this quintet of youngsters is sure to make waves over in the States soon on the strength of their new LP Hysterics. Check out a sample below and let us know what you think!
Rolo Tomassi – “Scabs” ******************************************************************** HOWLING BELLS DEBUT NEW SINGLEBack in 2006 a little indie quartet of indie kids by the name of Howling Bells who had departed from their home country of Australia in order to make it big in the teeming London scene only two years before released a melancholic, dark, and pulsating moodswing of a self-titled debut that set the blogs ablaze. On the heels of hit single “Low Happening” HB toured extensively, supporting the likes of the Killers, before diving back into the studio. Few details emerged from within but recently, Howling Bells posted a new track “Into the Chaos” on their Myspace from their forthcoming second album Radio Wars. A little bit synthier but no less enigmatic and moody than its predecessor. Head on over to the band’s page and give it a listen now! Here’s the band’s video for their hit single below. Hoping to hear more from these guys soon!
NEW BAND CHEER: THE ROPES Two-person electronic bands are a specialty of ours here at Cannibal Cheerleader. We frequently report on our friends Heartsrevolution, our favorites Crystal Castles, locals Ghostland Observatory, and others swimming through our playlists. Recently though, we came upon an electronic duo swinging less into the land of electro-thrash or dance rave, but new wave and even pop. The Ropes are a duo consisting of singer Sharon Shy and the enigmatic multi-instrumentalist Toppy who hail from NYC. With a sound that’s 100% indie-rock meets Garbage (yeah, remember them??), electronic layers and wailing riffs waft over disaffected, youthful, and sometimes endearingly clumsy lyrics. Seriously, check out the first line for “I Don’t Like to Get Dirty” below and you’ll admit it warrants a second listen. Interested to see where these two take their scatterbrain sound and pop sensibilities. We think they’re headed for the big time.

Check it out below and check the band’s Myspace for new tour dates (didn’t you guys just get off a nationwide tour? slow down killer!). We’ll definitely be at Emo’s in January checking these guys out yet again here in Austin!

Glass Candy – “Nite Nurses” ******************************************************************** TRYOUTS – THE WHISPERTOWN 2000’s SWIM Morgan Nagler is credited on Rilo Kiley’s Under the Blacklight for helping pen the smoldering “Dreamworld”, a whistful smoky lullaby about misfits, dreams, and unfulfilled passions. While Blake Sennett and company covered the song with syrupy synths, the song’s storyteller edge shone forth, as do the tunes on Nagler’s new effort Swim with her band the Whispertown 2000. With a spareness that feels like a country-rock confessional mixed beautifully with Nagler’s plaintative lonely vocals, Swim speaks of the same passion and dreams of the band’s Blacklight contribution but does so with a Southern charm that produces remarkable genuineness. This is indie-rock at its most convincing, scratchy vinyl in the back of the record shop, hidden gems at the deep end of the CD bin. Nagler and her swaggering cohorts have spun a record of infectious country-indie-rock in classic form. Definitely makes the team but may have trouble doing cheerleading moves in those cowboy boots.
