THE HIVES INVADE AUSTIN According to this Pitchfork report, after a string of European festivals the infamously insane Hives will be invading our shores with an American tour that thankfully dips south into Austin. Looks like they’ll be playing Sept. 16th at Stubb’s so mark your calendars now people. This is all of course to support the release of last year’s terrific Black and White Album which you should pick up immediately (here’s a track from it!).
The Hives – “Tick Tick Boom” ******************************************************************** NEW M83 VIDEO – “KIM AND JESSIE” Our favorite spacey, 80s-referencing, lovelorn dream-poppers in M83 (which is of course really just Anthony Gonzalez) have released a video for their single “Kim and Jessie”, one of the best tracks off their now seminal Saturdays=Youth. This albums stands beside some of the band’s best work and if the haunting vocals and transcendent tunes don’t convince you, maybe the awesome roller-skating in this very John Hughes-y video will! M83 – Kim & Jessie
M83 – “Kim and Jessie” ******************************************************************** TV ON THE RADIO REVEAL LP3 TRACKLIST Art-punkstersTV on the Radio have been releasing a flood of information lately. First the news that they are indeed done with their new album Dear Science, which is due out Sept. 23rd. And now, according to this report the album. now has a tracklist. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to hearing what “Love Dog” sounds like. Here’s hoping this one’s even half as good as Return to Cookie Mountain. Here’s the list:
01 Halfway Home 02 Crying 03 Dancing Choose 04 Stork & Owl 05 Golden Age 06 Family Tree 07 Red Dress 08 Love Dog 09 Shout Me Out 10 DLZ 11 Lover’s Day
Also, it looks like the band has added an Austin date to their upcoming tour, playing Oct. 30th at Stubb’s. Here’s hoping the set is appropriately Halloween-y!
KILLERS BEGIN DEBUTING THIRD LPThis update is all about the Killers. Is it a Quick Bite then? No, the Killers are just deserving of their own Cannibal Cheerleader update. Explaining our obsession with the Killers is difficult, considering the lack of respect they seem to garnish around the blogosphere. However, we here at CC are of the opinion that Brandon Flowers and company produce some of the best, most awe-inspiring, soaring rock and roll this side of U2, without all the self-importance. The Killers have produced two albums on which we could not find a track to skip. Throughout Hot Fuss, Sam’s Town, and even Sawdust we couldn’t find a track that didn’t feature at least some attractive qualities to us. Basically, the Killers write fantastic songs and we love them for it.
According to this Rock Daily report the Killers are eyeing a November release for their as-of-yet untitled third LP that’s being produced by Stuart Price, who remixed “Mr. Brightside” for the band. As if that wasn’t exciting enough the Killers played a special fanclub only show in NYC last night (the Victims as they’re called) and debuted some spectacular new tracks.
Here’s “Spaceman”:
And here’s “Neon Tiger”:
As far as other titles go Flowers has named the song “Tidal Wave” as another track on the LP. Of course there’s a lot of speculation running rampant about if certain tracks that haven’t been included on Sawdust but have been played at separate live shows will appear on the album. Our money’s on “Soft Surrender” being included, this Killers live gem. Enjoy!
Our favorite Canadian melodic-popsters Stars are back on their game with the posting of a new track entitled “Why I Want To Save You” on their Myspace. The track contains all the formulas for success – sweeping chorus, intricate instrumentation, heartfelt and lovelorn lyrics. It’s the Stars formula alright! Give it a listen below (track starts about ten seconds in so be patient blog readers!). Also, can’t wait to see Stars when they roll through town for this year’s ACL Festival. Woo!
OCTOPUS PROJECT TO LAUNCH NATIONWIDE TOUR Our favorite local instrumental-noodlers the Octopus Project are set to launch their nationwide tour starting with Lollapalooza in just a few days. We’re of course stoked to see one of our favorite local acts cause such a stir outside of Austin, so in support here’s there video for “Truck” which is garnering some attention over at YouTube. Go Octopus Project and see you when you get back in time for the ACL Festival!
******************************************************************** FLEETING JOYS POST NEW TRACK If you read Cannibal Cheerleader at all you know we’re huge shoegaze fans and there’s none better or purer working today than the California duo the Fleeting Joys, whose new record (with no title or cover art yet as we see) drops August 11th. The band just posted a brand new track to their Myspace called “You Are the Darkness” and it’s up there with the highest quality spins from their first LP. This might be their next “Lovely Crawl” so give it a listen and let us know what you think!
Fleeting Joys – “You Are the Darkness” ******************************************************************** LOST CRYSTAL CASTLES VIDEO While this may not be news to some of you since this video leaked back in January, it’s a big deal for us here at Cannibal Cheerleader who somehow just stumbled across Crystal Castles‘ “Air War”. So, for the sake of loving all things Crystal Castles we’ll repost the video here. Supposedly this video was scrapped way back in 2006 around the time of the Alice Practice EP but found its way onto the internet regardless and now it’s here for you to partake in. If it’s new to us right? Enjoy!
Here at Cannibal Cheerleader we recently had an interview with one of our favorite local acts Southern Drama. Here’s an exercpt:
“REMOVED BY REQUEST“
Read the rest of the interview when it gets published over at Soundcheck Magazine. Here are some more awesome pics by Meg Seidel from their show at Beauty Bar – enjoy!
The demand for a new Madvillain album has clearly reached a fever-pitch as Stones Throw Records is releasing a remix album of the original Madvillainy entitled Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix by none other than the original producer Madlib. While the sick rhymes from MF Doom might be the same, the new production from Madlib makes this album more than worth listening to, as his inspired new flavoring of all your favorite MV tracks (supposedly crafted while on a ten-hour plane ride to Tokyo) reignite the passion that came with the first spin of the original’s rapid-fire raps. Check out a few tracks below and order this album from Stones Throw (specifically the completely awesome sounding deluxe package complete with comic book) immediately.
Madvillain – “Pearls” ******************************************************************** NEW BAND CHEER: FIGHT BITE
After hearing about these guys from both Gorilla vs. Bear and Stereogum, and noticing that they live just up the road in Denton, Texas, we here at Cannibal Cheerleader decided to check out Fight Bite, and we’re definitely glad we did. Like stumbling upon the latest shoegazey-wunderkind before they’ve reached their full potential, the duo of Leanne Macomber and Jeff Louis produce such star-filled, dreamy, escapist pop masterworks to suggest they’ve been around for decades rather than just for a few months. Check out “Swissex Lover” below, the anthem to every teenage late-night firework fight captured in slow motion on super-8 film ever. They don’t have any shows planned for south of the DFW area right now, but hopefully they’ll take the roadtrip down to Austin and delight us with their syrupy goodness before too long!
Also, be on the lookout for their debut LP Emerald Eyes (that’s the cover up above) which they’ll be releasing tonight at a specialshow in Denton. If anyone obtains a copy shoot it our way, we’d love to get a copy! ******************************************************************** NEW GASLIGHT ANTHEM VIDEO
New Jersey punksters the Gaslight Anthem have just released a video on their Myspace for their newest single “The ‘59 Sound” from their forthcoming LP of the same name. Take a gander below and if you can spot these guys on their never-ending tour around the country, and you have an attraction to Springsteen and townies, check these guys out immediately!
NEW KAREN O NATIVE KOREAN ROCK VIDEOS Our friends over at The Modern Age managed to capture some excellent videos of KO and the Native Korean Rock crew performing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman’s stripped down songs of romance and desire lost at sea.
Here’s there show review:
“The stage was set up like a kid’s school production of “South Pacific”, with a nautical extravaganza situated on the stage. A ship bow dead smack front and center, silver cellophane covering the floor, reflecting the blue and purple clear cellophane positioned by the monitors and drum kit–giving the impression of a dreamy sea. A foamy seascape hung as a backdrop.
When the band came out, they were all clad in white, with little sailor’s caps donning their heads. As the ship’s leader, Miss Karen was decked out in a checked button down shirt, black poofy skirt with pockets, and a captain’s hat with “Native Korean Rock” written in the band.
The subdued, 30-minute set was charming way to spend the evening. The songs were quiet, sweet, and whimsical–perfectly showcasing Karen O’s uncanny ability to sing songs with an intimate vulnerability that always rings true.“
And of course, here are the videos of the songs “Days Go By” and “Comes the Night”. Check it people!
Native Korean Rock – “Rapt” ******************************************************************** SCAR-JO POSTS ITUNES PLAYLIST Our favorite Tom Waits-covering A-list actress Scarlett Johansson recently had her music tastes prodded in the iTunes music store. The 20-song mixtape, which leaned heavily on classic singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan and showmen like Frank Sinatra, featured a few left-field choices as well, including the Arcade Fire and one of our personal favorites, Celebration, of which Johansson states “I love the female vocals by Katherina. It inspired me to explore a new realm for my own vocals.” Come to think of it they do sound pretty similar – perhaps a ScarJo album covering Celebration is in order? You can view the list by clinking on this link or by going to Scarlett’s music Myspace. In other news, Scarlett Johansson has a music Myspace (who knew?)
Scarlett Johansson – “Innocent When You Dream (Live)” ******************************************************************** NEW COLD WAR KIDS There’s a lot going apparently in the world of The Cold War Kids who last we heard were entrenched deep beneath the earth at work on their sophomore LP. Well the Kids have emerged into the sunlight and the result is Loyalty to Loyalty which comes out Sept. 23rd according to Stereogum. They’ve also got a new track up on their Myspace called “Something Is Not Right With Me” which retains the yelping, carnival-esque noodlings of their past sounds but adds a little bit more bounce and a harder edge that we hope hints at an album of soul-shaking rock and roll from these guys. Also, it looks like the troupe will be swinging through Austin on Oct. 24th at Emo’s so be sure and check that out as well. Here’s the tracklist for L2L:
1 Against Privacy 2 Mexican Dogs 3 Every Valley Is Not A Lake 4 Something Is Not Right With Me 5 Welcome To The Occupation 6 Golden Gate Jumpers 7 Avalanche In B 8 I’ve Seen Enough 9 Every Man I Fall For 10 Dreams Old Men Dream 11 On The Night That My Love Broke Through 12 Relief 13 Cryptomnesia ******************************************************************** NEW GNARLS BARKLEY VIDEO Not much to be said about this Odd Couple standout except, why are Gnarls Barkley so damn clever? Great tunes, great videos, great pairing. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse 4 lyfe.
THE MOUNTAIN GOATS TROT THROUGH AUSTIN According to this Pitchfork article our friend John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats fame will be swinging through Austin on November 1st at Antone’s on his upcoming fall tour in support of the excellent Heretic Pride. You know that we’ll be there with bells on, but until then, listen to this fantastic track and despair you’re not watching him live right now.
SOUTHERN DRAMA IN AUSTIN Performing at Austin’s own Beauty Bar last night, Southern Drama managed surpass all our expectations and capture a refreshing slice of retro-country rock with a subversive edge that proved both genuine and engaging. There exists a level of underlying difficulty when playing any version of country music – the danger of the tunes seeming kitsch or even worse, too poppy is ever-present. However, Southern Drama plowed through such criticisms with instrumental virtuosity, care of their brilliant violinist Naomi Cherie, and with the captivating howl of lead singer Clarissa Ysel. With a voice more reminiscent of a riot grrrl act than a gypsy-country band, Ysel brings a level of emotion to songs steeped in evocative imagery, pulling the listener into the band’s complicated world. Worth mentioning is of course the care the band seems to take with their presentation, dressing up in psycho-carnival wares, instantly inviting and absurd all at once, proving to us here at Cannibal Cheerleader that Southern Drama is not only deserving of our close attention for their music but for their whole visual and performance formula. We’ll definitely be keeping up with these ladies, check in for more details this week! Southern Drama – “French Song” ******************************************************************** KAREN O PLAYS NATIVE KOREAN ROCK IN NYC Here’s a little show review by our friends over at the Music Slut in NYC who were lucky enough to be able to attend the debut of Karen O’s side project Native Korean Rock Monday night.
“I was simply ecstatic when word spread last week that Karen O would be debuting her new side project, Native Korean Rock, at one of Brooklyn’s most beloved & miniscule venues. For just about a half hour, she showcased a collection of love songs on par with the latter tracks from Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Show Your Bones (most notably ‘Warrior’ & ‘Sweets’), backed by a quintet comprised of strings, drums & guitars. While we all know and love Karen for her gravelly howls and mighty stage persona, it’s sometimes easy to forget that her demure side is just as impressive & captivating. The stage was adorned quite eloquently with a Korean flag, ample blue cellophane & a partial ship bow (which read ‘Seoul’). Key elements of Karen’s outfit included roses, fringes & a spectacularly detailed navy blue cap. All in all, an immensely beautiful & touching evening.”
Here’s the setlist and encore:
Setlist Ooo. Body. Visits. Beast. Rapt. Sunset Sun. Comes The Night. Day Go By.
Encore Indian Summer. Day Go By [Reprise]
******************************************************************** TV ON THE RADIO REVEAL LP3 DETAILS That’s right, hot on the heels on one of our favorite records of yesteryear, Return to Cookie Mountain, art-punkers TV on the Radio will be releasing their third LP Dear Science, on Sept 23rd according to Pitchfork. Further details such as a tracklist and cover will obviously be forthcoming so stay tuned for further details!
TV on the Radio – “Blues From Down Here” ******************************************************************** BLOC PARTY VS. SEX PISTOLS?? Looks like the battle between post-punk and punk ‘77 is on as Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon became involved in a heated confrontation with Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke over the weekend at the Summercase Festival in Barcelona. You can read all of the details here but apparently things got nasty when Okereke asked the Rotten one if his other former band, Public Image Ltd., would ever get back together, prompting Lydon to apparently go on a racist tirade. Both parties were separated by their respective entourages but details are still blurry as to what was said or inferred by either party. Still, to say that Johnny Rotten isn’t crazy is pretty much a guarantee that you’ll be on the wrong side of the argument, at least, that’s our two cents. Any more news and you’ll be sure to hear about it from us!
KAREN O REVEALS NEW SIDE-PROJECTOver the weekend our favorite art-punk frontwoman Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs revealed her involvement in a new side project called Native Korean Rock. Here’s the announcement from KO from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ blog:
“Native Korean Rock is a side project of mine comprised of a body of love songs written over the last two years, to be performed with a motley crew of NYC natives. Expect high drama, high stakes in two intimate performances.
Does Native Korean Rock have anything to do with Yeah Yeah Yeahs? NO
Are these the leaked demos of years ago? NO“
Check out the band’s Myspace and check the flyer below for the NYC shows. Anyone attending this one want to take some pictures for us? Here’s a few Native Korean Rock tracks to download – fair warning, they’re appropriately lo-fi. Enjoy!
Karen O – “OOO” Karen O – “visits” Karen O – “rapt” ******************************************************************** CONOR OBERST LEAKSHere at Cannibal Cheerleader all the news of Conor Oberst ‘returning to form’ on his new solo, self-titled LP had us a little worried. We loved Cassadaga and we’ve been digging on his overtly political diatribes on the last few records, we’d prefer if our Bright Eyed troubadour stayed on this winding path. Suffice to say, during an initial run-through of Conor Oberst we’re pleasantly surprised that while this singer-songwriter has pared back the lush instrumentation, his penchant for wordy, poetic lyrics and impressive metaphor have been left well-intact. Check out a few tracks and let us know what you think folks!
“MP3s removed by request” ******************************************************************** ONE DAY AS A LION LEAKSDelivering on the promise of last week’s preview on the band’s Myspace, One Day As A Lion self-titled EP not only captures the fire and fury one has come to expect from the Rage Against the Machine MC, but also illuminates an evolution in his sonic palette, as drummer Jon Theodore helps push Zach de la Rocha towards a more dub-oriented reggae sound. Equal parts grime, rap, rock, and drum-n-bass, One Day As A Lion scorches through 5 economical tracks that promise great things in the band’s future. Here’s hoping for a full-length!
One Day As A Lion – “Last Letter” One Day As A Lion – “If You Fear Dying” ******************************************************************** MF DOOM/J DILLA/GHOSTFACE COLLAB SURFACESYes, it’s a day of leaks here at Cannibal Cheerleader but few seem so rare as this posthumous number from the great J Dilla. It’s a collaborative effort, two tracks from Jay Dee’s Donuts (”Anti-American Grafitti” and “Geek Down”) renamed, revamped (to become “Sniperelite” and “Murder Goons”), and flowed over by two master MCs (MF Doom and Ghostface Killah respectively). The end result is Sniperlite and you can hear the mashup of both songs below, in all their glory. Check it and be awed at the production mastery that was J Dilla.
Dilla/Doom/Ghostface – “Sniper Elite & Murder Goons” ******************************************************************** UZI AND ARI GET EQUIPMENT STOLEN The scourge of the indie-rock world has struck again, this time it’s our shoegazey-cum-indie pop favorites Uzi and Ari who have been left ‘out in the cold’ so to speak after their equipment was stolen from their own house! Here’s their Myspace bulletin with the details:
“Hi droogs.
This is really getting old, isn’t it? Reading about the misfortunes of Uzi & Ari. Must be a curse upon us. But, as Christian Bale said last night in ‘The Dark Knight,’ the night is darkest just before the dawn. We hope.
Last night at about 4am, some hoodlums broke into our house, while we were sleeping and made off with the following items:
Roland Juno 106 Synthesizer (black in color) Nord Electro-2 keyboard (red in color) Fender Twin Reverb amplifier Fender Mustang bass guitar (white in color) Boss DD-5 Digital Delay Boss DD-6 Digital Delay Dell Inspiron Notebook Laptop (black in color) Behringer 1204 FX mixer (dark gray in color) Tascam 4 Track (light gray) Korg Electribe ESX1 drum machine (red in color) Ludwig Acrolyte snare drum (matte silver in color)
and various power cords, guitar cables, etc., totalling about 4500 dollars worth of equipment. i’ll post pictures soon.
If you know anyone who might have acquired new equipment like this, please be a good samaritan and let us know. This is just happening too often to bands, it’s crippling. We already make such a meager earning, we don’t even break even. It’s getting harder and harder to justify doing this anymore, it’s just an uphill battle constantly. This is the third time we have been robbed, but this is just ugly, to be robbed in your own home while you are sleeping.
Anyway, I would feel awful to ask for donations again. So many of you were so generous in donating for the vinyl, I know our fan base isn’t huge and you must be exhausted with your own struggle and strife.
We will, however be throwing a sort of benefit show/party in downtown Salt Lake in late August. We’re trying to do it on a rooftop or something cool that a lot of people will want to come to. I’ll post more information as I get it.
Sorry to be such a downer. I posted a new song, ‘Wolf Eggs,’ from the new record, a little earlier than I had planned, to lighten the mood. I don’t want you coming to our page and just feeling bad all the time.
We’ll get through this!
xo ben“
So there you have it folks, if you see any of that equipment out there get it back to the band! Instrument thieves should be shot on sight! Stop destroying our indie-rock idealism! Here’s a video from the band and be sure to check out the band’s new album Headworms which drops Oct. 15th.
TILLY/BELAIRE/RINGO D’STARR ROCK EMO’SLast night at Emo’s here in Austin, Texas, attendees of the earth-shattering performances of Tilly and the Wall, Belaire, and Ringo Deathstarr were witness to a brilliant becoming, as three already immensely respectable acts combined forces for an evening of sonic epiphanies, with each band blowing away expectations to an infectiously joyous crowd. The room teemed with life as if every track by every band meant the world to each person in the club, and the acts rode these vibes to the top of their respective games. With so much good to be said about all three groups, I thought it best to do a show review about each one separately, in chronological order.
Ringo Deathstarr Leading off the night were relative newcomers Ringo Deathstarr who nonetheless have managed to claim the throne as Austin’s best new band around seemingly overnight with this, one of their strongest performances yet. Starting with a slow churn that saw the band testing the waters with gorgeous guitarwork and echo-laden vocals, the foursome quickly whipped into crunchy numbers such as “Down on You”, to the crowd’s delight. All the while lead singer Elliot Frazier kept up his mysteriously aloof nature and threw guitars to the ground with such carefree effortlessness and reckless abandon as to suggest the shoegazers have finally become rockstars. We here at Cannibal Cheerleader believe that Ringo Deathstarr don’t have to prove it to us anymore; these guys are some of the finest rock musicians not just in Austin, but the whole country. Aligned like a firing squad, all four members in a line at the front of the stage, with the audience as their willing victims, Ringo Deathstarr brought their A-game as an opener and managed to set the bar sky-high for the following acts. Ringo Deathstarr – “Down on You”
Belaire No performance would’ve been harder to follow than Ringo Deathstarr’s guitar-throwing, confetti filled, wall-of-sound extravaganza, but Belaire managed to take the challenge in stride and delivered a performance both musically solid and creatively inventive, turning kitsch keyboard midi-tracks into genuine hip-shakers and delighting rockers and ravers alike. Having only just recently reformed with the addition of three new members, Belaire nonetheless proved they can still bring the goods by combining synth-experimentalism with rock aesthetics and dance grooves into a hypnotic combination that, while requiring some getting used to, ranks among some of the best damn music in Austin today. Not recommended for those into bland pop, Belaire tore through their bizarre cache of oldies and debuted tracks from their upcoming fall release, the details of which have yet to be released. Poised effortlessly behind a wall of keyboards set up at the front of the stage, this quintet proved guitars aren’t the only instruments that get the people moving in Austin. Belaire – “You Really Got Me Goin’”
Tilly and the Wall One can only imagine the anxiety of having two bands absolutely kill before your band has a chance to play, the crowd already in a frenzy before your arrival, and you knowing you have to give it your all or go home now. That was the attitude that Tilly and the Wall seemingly attacked the stage with last night, bursting forth with such fervor and energy as to claim this was the only show that ever did and ever will matter to the band. With a dazzling light show blazing behind them, a cornucopia of streamers and balloons cascading through the audience, and a Jamie Presnall tap dancing on a raised in the middle of it all, Tilly tore through a set of oldies such as “Nights of the Living Dead” and some new tracks off of their latest LP O such as “Pot Kettle Black”, all of which the audience connected with instantaneously. The band’s music combines infectious pop melodies with subversive indie-rock lyrics on love, loss, desperation, and the outsider experience, sounding like a twee band on steroids, with all the sarcastic and scathing humor of such acts with a degree of punk fury and inventiveness to boot. This of course was the case for last night’s show, as Tilly and the Wall left it all on the table, furiously playing through a brilliant set of blazing sing-a-long duets and guitar shrieks before calling an end to the night’s festivities. Exhausted and exhilarated all at once, all us crazy kids bid adieu to Emo’s in hopes that maybe next time we’d get a warning before another show with three acts as good as these guys caught us off guard. Tilly and the Wall – “Pot Kettle Black” ******************************************************************** ALL GIRL SUMMER FUN BAND REVEAL THIRD LP With a name that reads exactly how the group’s music sounds, All Girl Summer Fun Band have surprised us with the announcement of their third LP, entitled Looking Into It. Supposedly the tracks on this record, while still maintaining the bubblegum simplicity and wild energy of the earlier albums, will rock harder and louder than previous efforts. We’ll take it any way you give it to us ladies! Check out the Pitchfork article for more details. Here’s the tracklist:
01 Not the One for Me 02 Something New 03 Oh No 04 Trajectory 05 Lost 06 Everything I Need 07 The Only Ones 08 Rewind 09 Looking Into It 10 Plastic Toy Dream 11 This Will Never End
All Girl Summer Fun Band – “Samantha Secret Agent” ******************************************************************** RA RA RIOT POST SONG FROM UPCOMING DEBUT LP Ra Ra Riot have posted on their Myspace a new version of “Dying is Fine”, a song originally on their self-titled EP, that will now be featured on The Rhumb Line, their debut LP on Barsuk. The band’s intricate instrumentation suits this higher-end production and this recording seems to capture much of the band’s raw live energy. Ra Ra Riot will be swinging back through Austin Oct. 3rd at Stubb’s, so don’t miss them!
Yeesh! Long post! Hope this will tide you over for the weekend people, I need to catch up in my work on the paper version of Cannibal Cheerleader. Until then, leave a comment or two and tell me what you think!
