Southern Hospitality

CRYSTAL CASTLES LIVE FROM GLASTONBURY
We’ve got some awesome new footage straight from Andy of Lies Records of Cannibal Cheerleader favorite Crystal Castles performing at Glastonbury (finally, a festival that knows how to film shows right). They perform a killer version of non-album track “Baptism”, “Black Panther”, and a scorching rendition of “Yes/No” (Andy says to watch this last one at 3:43 to see the security guard try to shut off the band, awesome). It’s a shame CC doesn’t get the credit in the States that it does across the pond, because here’s one band that’s actually deserving of the hype. Come back to Texas you two for some Austin hospitality!

ACTION DESIGN EXTENDS TOUR TO AUSTIN
According to the Action Design Myspace the former Tsunami-Bombers are swinging through Austin Sept. 10 at Red 7 after their jaunt on the much maligned (by this blog anyway) Warped Tour. Since we unfortunately missed the band their last time through, you know we’ll be hitting up this one.

HEARTSREVOLUTION HIRING?
From the Heartsrevolution Myspace:

“WE NEED A DRUMMER…
We are looking for a drummer living in the New York area with a flexible schedule.
Simply submit a photo of yourself along with your astrological sign to heartsrevolution@gmail.com and leave a one word description of yourself as the subject.

Thank you”

There you have it – if you’re interested in participating in one of the most exciting electro-clash acts out there and have a penchant for banging on things, hit these guys up immediately! Who knows, you might be cruising in the Heartschallenger van.

NEW BAND CHEER: SOUTHERN DRAMA
A combination of baroque-pop sound and rock aesthetics, with a peppering of jazzy experimentalism and Gothic undertones, along with a great number of other literate descriptors, Southern Drama, an all-girl trio from Austin, are clearly hard to pin down. Violin solos float by the listeners’ ears as easily as lead singer Clarissa Ysel Sugarcube-vocals. It’s either a nightmarish, 50s style vaudeville act or one of the best indie bands in Austin, Southern Drama is not so much a band but a complete art project package and definitely deserving of all the attention we here at Cannibal Cheerleader can muster for them. Check these ladies out immediately at their Myspace and see if you can’t write a better description of them than I can.

Love Thy Neighbor

BORIS BLOWS AUSTIN AWAY
It goes without saying that when it comes to metal, Japanese trio Boris remains in a completely different league than the majority of other ‘heavy’ bands working today. With a combination of sludge, drone, and stoner metal built on top of a framework of mind-blowing virtuosity by guitarist Wata, guitarist/vocalist/bassist Takeshi, and drummer Atsuo, one could expect the band to put on a live show that borders on perfection. Saturday here in Austin at the Mohawk, Boris did not disappoint.
While opener Clouds experimented with melodic metal and Torche brought the requisite crunch-factor that metal-heads crave, the Boris experience was near mystical, as they whipped through tracks from their latest LP Smile as well as cuts from Pink with the help of master guitarist and special unannounced guest Michio Kurihara (who assisted the band on their Rainbow LP). As the smoke machine billowed around the band who played loose and free during their entire set, the audience quickly became mesmerized, only snapping from their metal-induced haze at the end of each extended cut, which was ultimately followed by rapturous applause. Starting slowly with “Flower Sun Rain”, Boris built up speed through the entire set before eventually settling on such fantastic cuts from Smile such as “My Neighbor Satan” and ending on a sublime note, leaving the audience begging for more. Ultimately Boris proved that metal can be an avant-garde art form, melodic and breathtaking in its head-banging fury, all while treating Austin to the heaviest show it might see this year. Here are a ton of pictures I took at Mohawk and a cut from their latest LP. Enjoy!

GRAND OLE PARTY ON MTV2

It appears that our old friends from San Diego Grand Ole Party are tearing it up on MTV2, as their video for “Look Out Young Son”, a choice cut from their Humanimals LP is now in rotation according to the trio. Definitely keep an eye out for it and check the rad video below.

HEADLIGHTS NEW DAYTROTTER SESSION

Illinois-natives Headlights have just put up a new Daytrotter Session and it includes a great rendition of their hit from Some Racing, Some Stopping “Cherry Tulips”. According to the band’s Myspace:

“All these songs were re-invented for the Daytrotter sessions. We used all the great vintage gear — old keyboards and an upright bass, loop pedals and what not. They have really cool toys.”

Take a listen!

Headlights – “Cherry Tulips” (Daytrotter)

Thanks everyone for readings and thanks to Treasure Mammal for stopping by my work yesterday even though I missed his show! He’s a really great guy so be sure and check him out! Any comments?

Quick Bite 7 – Total Winner

TREASURE MAMMAL IN AUSTIN TONIGHTIt would seem that forces beyond my control are conspiring against me, as I find that I will be unable to attend tonight’s Treasure Mammal show at the Opera House here in Austin. However, if you live in Austin and you love music you’re basically required to attend this show, as the T. Mammal experience is one of the most mind-blowing live presentations you may ever encounter. Seriously, I can’t encourage people enough to attend this show, and unless you’re as lame as me (if only I could bring in the bucks writing a blog!) then you have no excuse. T. Mammal goes on at 10pm according to the people on the phone from the Opera House but show up early and bring Abe some beer or something! Tell them to put it on the Cannibal Cheerleader bill.
If anyone attends this show and grabs some pictures please let me know and I’ll post them here. Otherwise, have a great show Treasure Mammal and we’ll look forward to hearing more from you this year!

PS. Mp3s are back tomorrow!

The One-Two Punch

FRIGHTENED RABBIT/OXFORD COLLAPSE IN AUSTIN
Last night at Mohawk here in Austin audiences were treated to the indie-rock equivalent of the 0ne-two punch, with Scottish crooners Frightened Rabbit teaming up with poppy-punksters Oxford Collapse for an evening of scorching numbers, all played with such effortlessness the boys in the bands made it look easy.
Oxford Collapse opened and by the time lead guitarist Michael Pace’s amp blew out in mid-song we knew we were in for a good set. Playing loose and cavalier the trio bounced around the stage with an energy that even got the much-maligned Austin hipster crowd to shake their hips.
Frightened Rabbit’s music, while definitely more reserved, nonetheless sounded equally bombastic with the band ripping through tracks from their newest LP the Midnight Organ Fight with ease. Tracks like “The Modern Leper” and Cannibal Cheerleader favorite “The Twist” got us to our feet in no time flat, and frontman Scott Hutchison sings each tune with the grit and fervor of a man holding back years of tears with each word. Both bands provided for an emotional experience that won’t soon be forgotten here in Austin. Great double bill and kudos to OC, FR, and especially Mohawk. Here are some more pics from last night:

NEW STARS “BITCHES IN TOKYO” VIDEO
One of our favorite releases of last year (as you can read from our first post ever) was StarsIn Our Bedroom After the War. It combined our love of well-honed and perfectly executed pop music with our penchant for subversive politics, all wrapped up with a little bit of rock and roll to boot. One of the best songs from that album was undeniably “Bitches In Tokyo” so it’s awesome to see that even a year after the album was released we have the band’s new video for this standout track. Check it out below and be sure and pick up the entire Stars’ discography (if you like music that is).

NEW BAND CHEER – PONYTAIL

We’ve heard the rumblings about Baltimore’s Ponytail for a while now. From their recent Pitchfork review all the way back to mixtapes circling the Internet from radio stations in Maryland. But it wasn’t until we heard the band’s newest LP Ice Cream Spiritual, a bricolage of pop-punkery and noise-rock mashed into a rainbow cataclysm of sound and fury, that we decided to throw our full weight behind this great act. Truth be told Ponytail is one of our favorite new bands of the year bar-none and we’ll be impressed to see what they’ve got in store as the year progresses. Word on the street is they’re one of the best live acts around so here’s hoping they swing through Austin! MP3s are sadly still down but here’s a video to tide you over and introduce you to their fantastic sound.

TERROR THURSDAY – CREEPERS
One of the weirdest Terror Thursdays yet, Dario Argento’s Creepers (the American edit of Phenomena) stars Jennifer Connelly as the new girl in an all-female boarding school when murder mysteriously star occurring. Seemingly missing massive chunks of the plot due to perhaps a poor quality film print or bad editing (perhaps Phenomena is more complete?) the film nonetheless impresses with the Italian master’s signature artful kills and enough disgusting gore (pool of body parts and maggots anyone?) to impress even the most jaded horror fans. I give this one 3 out of 4 bloody pon-poms though it might get more when I rent the full version of the film. Look for the review in the future!

That’s it for this week folks! Hopefully mp3s will be back next week! Any comments?

Quick Bite 6 – As A Kite

HIGH PLACES REVEAL ALBUM DETAILSKnown more commonly as the ‘Brooklyn duo with the weird drumset’, experimental artists High Places have revealed the tracklist (below), album art (above), and release date (Sept. 23rd) of their new self-titled album on label Thrill Jockey. This of course follows the band’s meteoric rise since the digital release of singles’ collection 03/07-09/07 and you can read the full details over at Pitchfork. Here’s the tracklist:

01 The Storm
02 You in Forty Years
03 The Tree With the Lights in It
04 Vision’s the First…
05 Gold Coin
06 Papaya Year
07 Namer
08 Golden
09 A Field Guide
10 From Stardust to Sentience

This is shaping up to be one of our favorite releases of the year but that baby cover up there is reminding us of a bad trip! Yikes!

That, That Don’t Kill Me

BE YOUR OWN PET CANCEL WARPED TOUR DATESOn a recent posting on the Be Your Own Pet website, the band states:

“We regret to inform our fans that we will not be participating in this year’s Warped Tour. We have been going non-stop for the past 6 months and didn’t realize how much the intense schedule would take out of us. Something had to give and sadly it’s this tour.”

Seeing their last live show here in Austin definitely makes it easy for us to understand how the band might be a little tired after all this non-stop touring. Also, as we’ve mentioned before, Jemina Pearl was none too happy to be participating in the poseur-filled Warped Tour, so looks like this might be a win-win. Get some rest guys!
********************************************************************
WHISPERTOWN2000 CHANGE NAME, PLOT TOUR
Whispertown2000 (remember, no space!), or now The Whispertown 2000 have begun mapping out their new tour via their Myspace and here’s what their most recent bulletin had to say:

“Hello, fine people.

So, it looks as if our preposed tour should happen in September. Please respond if you or someone you know books at a college or venue.
We would love to support or open up for someone in your town!!!

P.S.
New Record to be released early October!!

P.S. We’re changing our name to The Whispertown 2000 .. :)

P.S.
Website and Merch Store soon to come

P.S. Pushing Oars…
P.S.
xo”

So you’ve got a new Whispertown 2000 LP, a new tour (please swing through Austin!), a new website, and a new name! And who wants to bet me ‘Pushing Oars’ might just be the name of this their sophomore release? Only time will tell, stay tuned for more from these guys…

TREASURE MAMMAL TOUR BEGINSOur favorite motivational speaker/experimental hip-hop artist Treasure Mammal is about to embark on his US tour! He’s going to be swinging through Austin this coming Sunday, and you know that Cannibal Cheerleader will be there with bells on to capture the whole event. If you’re on his itinerary (check out the Myspace!) then be sure and see this guy: the experience is life-altering.

KANYE WEST RESPONDS TO BONNAROO INCIDENT
The blogosphere has erupted over the past week over an incident at Bonnaroo where Kanye West’s late night set, scheduled to begin at 2:45am was delayed until 4:45am for (before today) unknown reasons.
What could have been a simple controversy about disgruntled fans quickly turned into racist tirades against proud black artists who don’t display the humility that privileged young hippies feel they should. It of course goes without saying that the backlash against any African-American artist who doesn’t meet the fickle Internet’s standards will be far stronger than a Caucasian performer and the comments section on the likes of Stereogum are proof enough of that. Commentators claim that a mere apology would have sufficed, though given the fact that they were already throwing things on Kanye’s stage, perhaps it was their turn to apologize to him. Obviously I have strong feelings on the issue, however not so much as our friend Mr. West who comments on his blog (copied here in its brutally honest entirety, thanks Pitchfork):

“I am sick of negative people who just sit around trying 2 plot my downfall… Why???? I understand if people don’t like me because I like me or if people think tight clothes look gay or people say I run my mouth to much, But this Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I’ve ever had in my life. This is the most offended I’ve ever been… this is the maddest I ever will be. I’m typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!! Call me any name you want…. arrogant, conceited, narcissistic, racist, metro, fag whatever you can think of…. BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL! NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL! THIS SHOWS NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO BE GOOD AT SOMETHING THERE WILL BE PEOPLE THERE TO LIE ABOUT YOU AND BRING YOU DOWN! LIKE WAYNE SAYS PLEASE DON’T SHOOT ME DOWN CAUSE I’M FLYING! I’M FUCKING HURT BY THIS ONE. ALL I CARE ABOUT ARE THE FANS. JUST SAY THIS OUT LOUD IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE, “KANYE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT GIVING A GOOD PERFORMANCE.” CAN ANYONE HONESTLY SAY THAT ????????? HAS ANYONE EVEN TAKEN THE TIME TO AT LEAST DO THE MATH??? BONNAROO SHOULD HAVE RELEASED A STATEMENT IN MY DEFENSE BUT SINCE THEY HAVEN’T LET’S BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ON THIS TRUMAN SHOW AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY OCCURRED!!! FOR OVER A MONTH WE WENT BACK AND FORTH ON WETHER OR NOT WE COULD EVEN FIT MY STAGE AT THE FESTIVAL. ONE DAY THEY WOULD SAY YES… WE’D SEND THEM OUR SPECS THEN THEY THEY’D SAY OK… THEN THEY WOULD SEND SPECS BACK THAT DIDN’T FIT THE STAGE. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH FUCKING IDIOTS WHO DIDN’T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY. THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE … I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT’S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS! MY PEOPLE WORKED OUT A COMPROMISED STAGE PLOT AND A 3AM TIME SLOT AND I AGREED. FAST FOWARD TO THE DAY OF THE SHOW. MY PRODUCTION MANAGER TRIED TO LOAD IN FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE I WENT ON STAGE BUT THE FESTIVAL WOULDN’T ALLOW US TO DO ANYTHING UNTILL PEARL JAM LEFT THE STAGE. PEARL JAM ENDED ONE HOUR

LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT THAT POINT WE’RE RACING AGAINST THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT 4:20AM DON COMES BACK 2 THE BUS AND TELLS ME, ” IT WOULD TAKE 45 MORE MINUTES TO PUT ALL YOUR PYRO IN!” I SAY I HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE . I HIT THE STAGE AND PEOPLE HAD BEEN THROWING SHIT ON THE STAGE AND HAD ACTUALLY HIT THE JANE SCREEN WITH, I GUESS BOTTLES OR SOMETHING AND HAD BROKEN MY FUCKING SCREEN. REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE A SHORTY AND WATER WOULD HIT THE TV?????? WHEN I GOT 2 “THROUGH THE WIRE” I STEPPED ON THE FRONT PART OF MY STAGE AND THERE WAS SO MUCH LIQUID ON THE STAGE I COULDN’T MOVE WITHOUT SLIPPING. I HAD TO ADJUST MY WHOLE PERFORMANCE STYLE BECAUSE OF IT. A FEW MORE SONGS IN AND THE SONG WAS ON IT’S WAY UP.. I CUT A FEW SONGS FROM THE SET BECAUSE I WANTED PEOPLE 2 EXPERIENCE STRONGER WHILE THERE WAS STILL SOME DARKNESS TO PERFORM IT IN. I’VE STRUGGLED WITH STRONGER FROM IT’S CONCEPTION. REMEMBER LAST SUMMER WHEN I CANCELED SOME TV APPEARANCES. IT WAS BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO PERFORM STRONGER IN THE DAYTIME. ANYONE WHO CAME TO THE GLOW TOUR CAN UNDERSTAND WHY I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE IT PROPERLY. IT BROKE MY HEART THAT I COULDN’T GIVE THESE FANS STRONGER IN IT’S GREATEST FORM… BY THE TIME I GOT TO STRONGER IT WAS DAYTIME AND IT BROKE MY HEART. I’M SORRY TO EVERYONE THAT I DIDN’T HAVE THE ABILITY 2 GIVE THE PERFORMANCE I WANTED TO. I’M SORRY… SOMETIMES I GO 2, 3 DAYS W/O SLEEP WORKING ON MY PERFORMANCE… I HAVE TO ICE MY KNEES AFTER EVERY SHOW AND THEY HURT WHEN I WALK THROUGH THE AIRPORT… HAVING AN EXPENSIVE STAGE CUTS MY PAYDAY IN HALF… CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL!!!”

Spoken like a true artist Kanye. Here at Cannibal Cheerleader we realize when a performer on the level of Michael Jackson with a political slant reminiscent of Dylan reaches the top of the heap. Shame to see so many people trying to pull him down. This is actually a good segue into my next section…
********************************************************************
CANNIBAL CHEERLEADER – PRINT EDITION!As that last section may have made readers realize, I’m an opinionated person. However, Cannibal Cheerleader is more about the music than the politics but that’s going to change when we release the Cannibal Cheerleader Zine here in Austin, Texas. It will be available free in various locations around the city and will feature artist profiles, artwork, politics, music essays, and Austin-centric articles, all based around the theme of brave, creative music journalism with no commercial ties holding us down. Be prepared to be shocked (not that the idea of a Cannibal Cheerleader isn’t shocking enough, haha). Coming in mid-to-late July, look for it then.

PS. MP3’s will hopefully be back next week everyone!

Even Cowgirls Get The Blues

CORIN TUCKER MAKES APPEARANCE
The elusive frontwoman of the greatest American punk rock act of all time, Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney fame recently popped up at a Blue Giant show in Portland, according to Pitchfork (photo by these guys). Seeing as she’s supporting the Oregon scene, perhaps Tucker’s coming back into the punk fold? Lord knows we need her, so come back Corin! CT will be helping Blue Giant as they record their upcoming LP but is not expected to perform live with them for long. Still, here’s hoping we see a lot more of her and maybe, just maybe, S-K finds it in themselves to get back together (only in dreams…).
********************************************************************
TRYOUTS – THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM’S THE ‘59 SOUNDOn their sophomore LP Jersey-punk rockers the Gaslight Anthem have clearly decided that their sound, formerly split between Bruce Springsteen and Against Me!, needs to lean more towards the Boss than Tom Gabel and company. The explosiveness on The ‘59 Sound has been toned down a notch but the songwriting and heartfelt nature of the foursome’s music has been ratcheted up and on a precursory listen it appears the boys are in fine form, crafting a record with memorable hooks, intricate string instrumentation, and sincere lyrics. Sincerity might not be what you’d expect from the album given its song titles (”Even Cowgirls Get the Blues”, “Casanova, Baby!”, and “Here’s Looking At You Kid”) but wrapped in these kitsch, nostalgic recollections lie genuine emotion that extends to the present day. The record definitely makes the team, but readers might have to stay tuned; this record’s definitely a grower and probably warrants a couple more spins!
********************************************************************
TRYOUTS – THE SUBWAYS’ ALL OR NOTHING
The first track on the Subway’s sophomore effort “Girls and Boys” is one of the best rockers we’ve heard all year. Starting off with a rudimentary riff that explodes into distortion before giving way to call-and-answer male and female vocals, the song recalls the heyday of Oasis-britrock, where pop-rock wasn’t a dirty word and crunchy guitars mixed well with youthful voices. Yes our favorite UK trio is back on top of its game with All Or Nothing, an album chock-full of high-octane rockers that bely an air of exuberance and naiveté that comes off as genuine rather than label-made, as so many American pop-punkers sound (I’m looking at you Forever the Sickest Kids…). This record makes the team but may be shunned by the more popular kids because it’s too hopped up on sweets or something to practice properly. Still, a squad needs a crazy runt right?
********************************************************************
CANNIBAL CHEERLEADER HOSTING GONE!The site where we’ve been posting all of our mp3s recently deleted my account (I guess that’s what I get for paying tuition all those years, thanks UT…). Anyway, that means that all the old mp3 links on the site are currently down, oh no! Anyone have some suggestions for new hosting, preferably cheap and simple? Of course the CC main site is still hosted on Blogger so the main site is cool for as long as we have it on here. If there’s an mp3 you missed earlier, email me and I’ll put it back up as soon as we get new hosting. Until then, no new mp3s (unless you email me, in which case I might slip you something cool…).

This whole situation has me pretty stressed, so I need to chill out like Conor Oberst on the cover art for his new self-titled LP. License to chill indeed. Any comments?

Songs in the Afterlife

BALMORHEA IN SHORT FILM
According to Balmorhea’s Myspace their haunting, etheral music was recently used in an equally haunting and moving short film by Jared Hogan of the Savannah School of Art and Design. I’m a film student first and a music critic second, so this post is perfect for Cannibal Cheerleader! Watch the film here and comment on what you think. That picture of there is of the real Balmorhea, Texas skyline and fits the band’s music pretty closely as well.
********************************************************************
NEW FACELESS WEREWOLVES VIDEOThough this particular piece isn’t Cannibal Cheerleader produced, we’d nonetheless like to show it to everyone, as it features some solid live action from our favorite local garage-rock act the Faceless Werewolves. Check this out!

********************************************************************
NEW BAND CHEER – THAO NGUYENThao Nguyen, more commonly known as Thao with The Get Down Stay Down (the name of her backing band) is a Kill Rock Stars signee with a smokey croon that recalls CC fave Cat Power and a Southern rock vibe that’s equal parts joyous bounce and terrific pathos, all rolled into one. We here at Cannibal Cheerleader saw her perform live opening for Rilo Kiley and we’ve been in love with her new LP We Brave Bee Stings and All ever since. Definitely check this one out if you like acoustic-y southern songstresses as much as we do (and we like ‘em A LOT).
********************************************************************
THE HORROR, THE HORROR – THE HAPPENING
I went into The Happening this weekend not expecting much, as the critical reception of M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film had been lukewarm at best. However, I was pleasantly surprised with what was a taut, well-formed thriller, with plenty of guts and gore to offset the the dreamy dread that has become one of the director’s trademarks.
First however, I have to contextualize my feelings on Mr. Shyamalan, whose films I’ve always unabashedly adored. While the current zeitgeist in horror filmmaking might be leaning towards horror-porn and increased shock-value (not that I don’t like that stuff mind you), this director has chosen to approach the genre from a different direction, employing his own vision that I’ve dubbed ‘horror slowcore’, a steady stream of dread mixed in with intense introspection, religious questioning, and philosophical and political undertones. Excellent films like the Village (my personal favorite of his) come across as so divergent from the horror norm that many fans of the genre fail to engage themselves into the world of the film as they would with another scare-flick. Still, Shyamalan crafts layers upon layers of meaning into his worlds and is one of the only directors evolving the genre beyond its slasher roots (for better or for worse).
That said, the Happening isn’t the Village or the Sixth Sense, but it does have its share of great kills (death by lawnmower and suicidal construction workers for the win) and truly beautiful moments (Mark Walhberg’s and Zooey Deschanel’s final attempt to be together at what seems like their last moment is stirring and genuine). However the film’s evil force and its tendency to make people kill themselves sometimes comes off as absurd and the acting beyond the leads was spotty at best. Still, more than worth the price of admission and deserving of three out of four bloody pon-poms. Go see it folks.

NEW MY MORNING JACKET VIDEOS
Our favorite country-fried rockers My Morning Jacket were on Conan last night and their performance of “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream (Pt. 2)” rang to high heavens. We also have a video here of MMJ at Bonnaroo with Kirk Hammett from Metallica, so check it folks!

TERROR THURSDAY – EATEN ALIVE
Terror Thursday is back at Cannibal Cheerleader! This week’s screen-gem is from the twisted brain of Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s overseer Tobe Hooper. Eaten Alive is the story of an insane hotel owner and his penchant for murdering his tenants and feeding them to his pet crocodile. Ridiculously bizarre acting styles by all involved in the film and enough gore and guts to keep the audience on their toes. Definitely a weird one, but deserving of four out of five bloody pon-poms nonetheless.

FEED THE WIKILast off today we have a funny little phenom – seems as if people on Wikipedia are trying to decipher all the samples from Girl Talk’s new mashup Feed the Animals. From the looks of it seems like they’re being pretty successful so far, but does anyone know what they’re missing? Comment and let me know! See everyone next week!

NEW CRUISERWEIGHT VIDEO

To celebrate the release of Cruiserweight’s newest release Cruiserweight Rocks the Moon (available now on iTunes) here’s a live video of their single “Balboa” from the EP. Check it out below people, shot and edited by yours truly, and be sure and purchase this Cruiserweight EP (only 2.99? you know I got mine!).

TRYOUTS – GIRL TALK’ FEED THE ANIMALS
The new Girl Talk album Feed the Animals has officially crash landed onto the Internet and the same level of mashup-badassery we’ve come to expect from the Pittsburgh native. On a first run-through I heard samples from Kanye, Nirvana, M.I.A., Salt ‘N Pepa, Twisted Sister, Sinead O’Connor, Kelly Clarkson, Daft Punk, the Cure, T.I. Soulja Boy, that annoying theme-song from Dawson’s Creek, and innumerable hooks and riffs that I had definitely heard before but just couldn’t place. Seems like that’s just the way Girl Talk operates, finding the nuanced, inspired moments in pop music and combining them into an entirely new and increasingly original musical template. The difference between this release and Night Ripper is the quality of the layering of the samples, no longer a simple mish-mash of cool songs but a definitive new creation, segueing seamlessly not only between songs but through movements in each track. On a precursory examination, Feed the Animals definitely makes the team. Keep a lookout for it, because word is it’ll be available on a pay-what-you-want platform soon.
Correction: Feed the Animals is available on on a pay-what-you-want platform now, so swing on over to the Illegal Art website and download a copy immediately people!
